Interference: unique source of forgetting in working memory?

چکیده
In their opinion article, Lewandowsky, Oberauer and Brown [1] make a strong case against time-based accounts of forgetting in short-term andworkingmemory. We argue, however, that the interference-based account they favor is underspecified, that the time-loss functions predicted by time-based models are misconstrued and that the contradictory findings issued from the time-based resource-sharing (TBRS) model [2] are not properly addressed.

176 words) The Time-Based Resource-Sharing model of working memory assumes that memory traces suffer from a time-related decay when attention is occupied by concurrent activities. Using complex continuous span tasks in which temporal parameters are carefully controlled, Barrouillet et al. (2007) recently provided evidence that any increase in time of the processing component of these tasks resu...
متن کاملHow quickly they forget: the relationship between forgetting and working memory performance.
This study examined the contribution of individual differences in rate of forgetting to variation in working memory performance in children. One hundred and twelve children (mean age 9 years 4 months) completed 2 tasks designed to measure forgetting, as well as measures of working memory, processing efficiency, and short-term storage ability. Individual differences in forgetting rate accounted ...

متن کاملMechanisms of the contextual interference effect in individuals poststroke.
Although intermixing different motor learning tasks via random schedules enhances long-term retention compared with "blocked" schedules, the mechanism underlying this contextual interference effect has been unclear. Furthermore, previous studies have reported inconclusive results in individuals poststroke. We instructed participants to learn to produce three grip force patterns in either random...
متن کاملFurther Evidence for Temporal Decay in Working Memory
The sources of forgetting in working memory are a matter of intense debate: is there a time-related decay of memory traces or is forgetting uniquely due to representation-based interference? In a previous study, we claimed to have provided evidence supporting the temporal decay hypothesis (Portrat, Barrouillet, & Camos, 2008). However, reanalyzing our data, Lewandowsky and Oberauer (2009) demon...
